Week 2 Story The Monkey Who Gathered Lotuses

Image
In a time when Brahmadatta was reigning in Benares, Devadatta came to life again in the form of a monkey. He resided at the bottom of a mountain in the Himalayas where he became king over a tribe of monkeys. Devadatta was very self conscious however, and felt threatened that one day his sons would grow strong and overtake him as king. So when each of his sons were born the monkey king gelded them with his sharp teeth, preventing them from ever growing strong enough to overthrow him. It was until one day a monkey, pregnant with the Bodhisatta, fled the tribe for fear of her son being gelded at birth. The Bodhisatta was born and grew to be strong and sturdy, large framed, yet swift as the wind. The time came when the Bodhisatta asked his mother where his father was. The mother replied, "Your father lives far away. It is best that we stay here for your own safety. Your father is a jealous man." The Bodhisatta looked confused and replied, "What do I have for him to be ...

The Cunning Crane and the Crab by  W. H. D. Rouse. https://sites.google.com/view/jatakas/crane-and-crab I found this story to be interesting. The beginning of it was pretty straight forward and they author didn't try and hide the fact the crane was deceiving the fish. What I didn't expect was for the crab to come along. I thought that the story would end with the crane eating all of the fish and the morale would be to be more hesitant of predators. But when the smart crab deceived the cocky crane and made him agree to letting the crab put his claws around the crane's neck, the story changed a bit. In the end when the crane "got what was coming for him" I feel like the morale of the story shifted towards more of a good vs. evil theme where the villain eventually gets caught. The Crocodile and the Monkey's Heart by  Marie L. Shedlock https://sites.google.com/view/jatakas/monkey "He grew strong and sturdy, big of frame, well-to-do, and lived by a c...

Week 2 Reading Overview

I have chosen to read R.K. Narayan's Ramayana for a couple of reasons. I like the idea of it being from one reputable author, as well as it reading more like a novel. The public domain edition of the Ramayana uses various authors and styles which sounds confusing to me. The public domain edition also says it uses old fashioned language which I find slows me down a bit when I'm reading. So for those reasons I have chosen R.K. Narayan's version. The first comic I chose was  Hanuman: The Epitome of Devotion and Courage   because it sounded interesting when I was reading the chapter overviews. I've always liked stories with action and heroes and so this one caught my attention.  The second comic I chose was   Rama: Retold from the Ramayana   because I wanted to get a background of Rama's story because his name kept popping up in the other stories. I was hoping that this story would help get my bearings on who all the names are and how they're connected. The fi...

I chose to read  The Important Habit of Just Starting   by Jory Mackay not because it was the first option on the list, but because I felt like I could relate to what the title was saying. For me starting a project is the hardest part of it. Once I get started I don't like to stop until it's finished. I thought it was interesting when Jory Mackay mentioned in the article that us trying to concentrate in today's society is like a kid trying to diet in a candy store. It can be very difficult with all the distractions at our fingertips. For me, I am constantly doing something on my phone and have to leave it out of sight when I have a lot to do. Jory Mackay mentioned trying to set aside scheduled times to work on something like from 3-5 pm do homework. So 2 hours of work doesn't sound as bad as writing a short essay, even if the short essay would've only taken you 90 minutes to do.  The next article I read was  Eat the Frog First Thing in the Morning   by Thomas ...

Blogging technology overview

I'm slowly becoming familiar with blogging, but do not have extensive experience with picture editing and website design. These are things I would never research on my own, but I'm excited to do it now that I have a reason to lol. I think these are cool skills that could definitely be applicable to a wide variety of careers. I've actually been wanting to make a slideshow on our tv at the gym I work at with nutrition tips and recipes for our members. Hopefully this will help with that. The format of Indian Epics is different than any other class I've taken. More specifically I've never had to make a blog. In the past I've dreaded discussion posts, but this class looks like it will be fun. I think that the storybook is going to be really cool when it's finished. I always like seeing how semester long projects turn out because we get so long to work on them. I also like the idea of extra credit and the build your own schedule. Growth Mindset - Chasing Excellence

Image
I haven't heard of Carol Dweck before, but she had some interesting things to say. It's hard for me to completely jump on board with what she was saying because I was one of those kids that my parents kept up with my grades and anything lower than an A was frowned upon. I felt like I could relate to the other kid Carol Dweck was describing all throughout my child hood. It didn't matter how I got the job done as long as I got the A's, and often times when it was inconvenient I would cheat. Having that kind of mindset, the "whatever it takes" mindset can be good, but I feel like it's mostly unhealthy in the long term. I feel like it made me very motivated to go the distance to accomplish my goals, but I would stress out so hard about the fear of failure that it became exhausting. I read a book by Ben Bergeron called "Chasing Excellence" and I really liked what he had to say. Ben Bergeron is the coach of multiple Crossfit Games champions and he ta...
