Week 2 Reading Overview

I have chosen to read R.K. Narayan's Ramayana for a couple of reasons. I like the idea of it being from one reputable author, as well as it reading more like a novel. The public domain edition of the Ramayana uses various authors and styles which sounds confusing to me. The public domain edition also says it uses old fashioned language which I find slows me down a bit when I'm reading. So for those reasons I have chosen R.K. Narayan's version.

The first comic I chose was Hanuman: The Epitome of Devotion and Courage because it sounded interesting when I was reading the chapter overviews. I've always liked stories with action and heroes and so this one caught my attention.

The second comic I chose was Rama: Retold from the Ramayana because I wanted to get a background of Rama's story because his name kept popping up in the other stories. I was hoping that this story would help get my bearings on who all the names are and how they're connected.

The first video I chose was "A Diwali story: Rama and Sita defeat Ravana, the demon king"

I enjoyed the video story more than reading the comic. I was reading the subtitles on the screen while the video was playing, but hearing it in someone's voice helped me visualize it more. I liked this story, it reminded me of the movie Gladiator where the protagonist is an awesome guy who is cast out of the kingdom by someone bad and he has to overcome hardship and work his way back into the kingdom and prevail.

The second video I watched was "Purushartha - The Four Aims of Life"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2t8DsOYh_0&list=PLrWYQjLLbXcie5DuhgxacocxvQp_5pNIX&index=14
This video was short, but I found it very interesting. Purushartha comes from Purush which refers to man, and artha which refers to purpose. The four goals of human life are Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. Artha is the aim to achieve wealth, achieving wealth will lead to fulfillment and happiness. After Artha the aim is to achieve Kama which is pleasure through the 5 senses along with the involvement of the mind and the soul. Dharma is duty and to obtain Dharma is to pursue Artha and Kama with sincerity and honesty. Moksha is the highest level of purpose and is to achieve self content and spiritual peace. I found it interesting to look at the things that drives human actions.
